In 2007 Council resolved to explore the potential for urban development within the corridor generally stretching from Hillside/Plumpton through to Diggers Rest Township. Abutting a major freeway and railway corridor, and book-ended by the rapidly developing growth fronts of Melton’s Eastern Corridor and Sunbury Township, Council considers that this area represents a significant strategic opportunity for well serviced urban growth.
Diggers Rest – Plumpton Corridor
Council initially sought advice from the Minister for Planning regarding the potential for a residential corridor of up to 10,000 households through this area. However following advice from the Minister regarding the constraint that the Melbourne Airport Environs Overlay through the area represents, Council turned its attention towards the potential for a major regional employment precinct in the area.
Plans for this major regional employment precinct have now advanced a step closer last night when Melton Shire Council held a special meeting to pass a resolution to include the “Diggers Rest – Plumpton Corridor” in its submission to the Urban Growth Boundary Review. With respect to the significance of the proposed “Outer Metropolitan Road” and given that airport overlay can be used for industrial purpose, this proposal may in fact be worthy of some consideration.
The Department of Transport is currently undertaking a formal bus service review in the Shire of Melton.
The review will involve the evaluation of current bus services and consideration of local needs and service planning issues.
Are you someone who currently uses public buses to get around Melton – and would you like to see improvements in the number of services and their frequency?
Are you someone who currently uses public buses to get around Melton and potentially other places – but can’t because there aren’t any near you?
If so – Melton Shire Council would like to hear from you.
If you would like to contribute to the review with your suggestions for improving existing bus services or developing new services please contact Council’s Transport Connections Project Officer on 9747 7200 or email email@example.com
The Victorian Government announced in November 2008 its intention to expand Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) to support an expected city of 5 million.
Melbourne @ 5 million identifies investigation areas to accommodate an additional 134,000 homes in an expanded UGB.
An area of about 590ha which incompasses the township of Diggers Rest has been included as part of the investigation area. This area is much larger than previous proposals (Amendment C63) in relation to urban development for Diggers Rest.
The Growth Areas Authority (GAA) are calling on land owners within the investigation areas to provide submissions for consideration. (Submissions relating to land outside the Investigation Areas will not be considered.)
Residents now have an opportunity via the submission process to support an expansion of Diggers Rest.
Submissions can be made to:
Steve Dunn, Director, Policy and Strategy
Growth Areas Authority
Level 6, 35 Spring Street
Melbourne VIC 3000
(Submissions must be recieved no later than Feb 20th 2009)

In 2006, Council received funding through the then Department of Victorian Communities (now Department of Planning and Community Development) to implement the Small Township Project across the Melton Shire areas of Diggers Rest, Rockbank, Toolern Vale and Exford.
This entailed community consultation (speakouts) and the development of recommendations for each of the areas. Key areas identified for Diggers Rest where Pride of place (entrance signage and landscaping, historical significance), Social events and Public Art.
$15,000.00 will be provided to Diggers Rest to design, develop and implement a community project in response to the identified key recommendations. Projects are to be community based and must be completed by May 2009.
Council’s Community Development worker will facilitate the Diggers Rest Network Forum to be the catalyst to lead this project, gaining vital support from the residents of Diggers Rest and in particular, those residents who participated in the original consultations, in brainstroming and implementing this community project.

About 6.00 pm on Sunday the 8th of February 2009 two groups of males aged between 16-20 years met at the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve for the purpose of settling a dispute. The meeting had been pre-arranged through text messages and e-mails during the previous week.
One group consisted of youths from the Diggers Rest area with the other being youths from the St. Albans area. During the confrontation one youth was fatally wounded whilst a second was wounded and sustained life threatening injuries. This youth is in the Royal Melbourne Hospital Intensive Care Unit and is listed as serious.
A number of suspects have been arrested and it is anticipated that there will be further arrests today. We wish to re-assure people that all possible efforts are being made to identify and arrest all those involved in this tragic incident.
