Community aims to grow partnership

Melton City Council in conjunction with Djerriwarrh Health Services are conducting the Community Partnership Program. The program enables community groups to undertake projects in partnership with other local community groups. Share skills, experiences and knowledge, and together create a new opportunity to benefit the whole community. Participation includes funding of up to $3,000 per project.

In November 2013, the Melton City Council called for expressions of interest regarding the former Sunbury Electrification compound and shed at the Stan Payne Reserve in Diggers Rest. Subsequently, a submission was made which outlined the potential to create a sustainable community garden, consisting of raised beds. The existing onsite shed could provide an excellent enclosure for storage of garden tools together with an area for general activities similar to those based on the successful Men’s Shed concept.

It would be disappointing to allow this quality building to become nothing more than another storage shed, potentially susceptible to vandalism and a general waste of community infrastructure.

Diggers Rest essentially lacks a community hub. The proposed location offers the an opportunity to develop vital links between residents and the wider community. The development of this site would help to encourage and strengthen local participation and build on social capital for Diggers Rest.

Overtime, the facility will require infrastructure consistent with the Men’s Shed concept. Grant funding and the development of a regular community market at the site should help to provide sustainable options for future growth.

I would seriously like to connect with like minded residents and community groups interested in converting this waste land into a productive resource for the people of Diggers Rest.
