Once Upon a Bottle Neck

In 1991 the township of Diggers Rest saw the beginning of much awaited local road network improvements which included the Calder Freeway bypass.

The original cost estimates for this project was $600,000 and formed part of the Federal Governments $36 million dollar plan to upgrade the Calder Highway between Melbourne and Bendigo.

With the construction of twin bridges, accident black spots like the Vineyard & Plumpton cross roads were eliminated.  Pedestrian safety within the township was greatly improved as non residential traffic was redirected around the township.  Areas within the vicinity of the Railway Station, The General Store, our Primary and Pre School benefited most from the bypass.

Through the “Community Consultative Committee” established by Vic Roads, residents were able to contribute to the landscaping plans which included noise reduction measures.  Almost 20,000 native trees and shrubs were planted as part of the project.

Today, the Calder Freeway still remains an integral freight and commuter corridor to the Northern and Central Victorian townships.
