An Historic Tribute Restored

The Holden Road Houdini Marker has officially been reinstated, marking a significant milestone in the preservation of local history. This iconic monument, which commemorates Harry Houdini’s historic first controlled powered flight in Australia, has been meticulously rebuilt using the original design plans.

Thanks to the invaluable contributions of the Melton Historical Society, the restoration has stayed true to the monument’s original design. The society played a key role in providing these crucial design plans, ensuring an authentic reconstruction which honours the legacy of Houdini’s ground breaking achievement.

Adding to the historical integrity of the project, one of the original plaques has been successfully located and reinstalled. This plaque serves as a direct link to the monument’s past and reinforces the significance of the site. Meanwhile, the second plaque originally installed to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Houdini’s flight, is currently being recreated. Once completed, it will be reinstated alongside its counterpart, further enriching the tribute to this pioneering moment in aviation history.

The restoration of the Houdini Monument is a testament to the dedication of the local community and historical preservation groups. It ensures that future generations will continue to learn about and appreciate this remarkable event that took place in Diggers Rest. With the monument now standing proudly once more, the site remains a symbol of innovation, perseverance and the enduring impact of Houdini’s legacy on Australian aviation history.
