A call for waste drop-off hubs

Melton advocate Stephen Waddell is calling on residents to support a new petition urging Melton City Council to investigate the creation of local satellite waste drop-off hubs in areas known for illegal dumping.

The proposal suggests that small-scale, conveniently located disposal sites could significantly improve access to lawful waste disposal, helping residents do the right thing while reducing the impact of dumping on the environment and community. It’s seen as a practical addition to the Council’s existing education and enforcement efforts.

“Let’s be proactive — tackling illegal dumping will take infrastructure, not just education,” Waddell wrote on his Facebook page. “What are your thoughts? Would easier access, more surveillance and/or lower fees make a difference?”

The petition argues that making waste services more accessible is a critical step toward long-term change. Residents are encouraged to sign by providing their full name, street address and signature to ensure compliance with Council governance rules.
