Council rates under fire

A recent Facebook group post has described the 2021/2022 Melton Council rates as “unacceptable” during the current lock-down situation.

The post author, Diggers Rest local resident Nitin Patel, demonstrates the comparison between municipal rates in the Cities of Melton, Hume and Wyndham.

According to Mr Patel, Councils which do not apply a municipal charge or a reduced charge compared with Melton are “far more developed and have much more facilities than Diggers Rest”.

Manager for Corporate Services at Melton City Council, Mr Peter Bean at the August meeting of Council explained that Council has recently introduced a range of measures to support the community during this difficult time.

The measures include, a $200 waiver against the 2019/2020 rate period for those residents experiencing hardship.

Council also provides rate relief through its Financial Hardship Policy which is understood to deliver on relaxed payment terms and deferrals.

In support of the community, Mr Bean said that Council had also suspended legal action against rates and charges.
