Dog park audit

Watts Ward Councillor Moira Deeming moved a motion at the December 2020 meeting of Council requesting Council to prepare a report which would provide for improved dog parks within our municipality.

The motion, which was carried and supported by all Councillors sets out to address a number of concerns around the delivery and maintenance of dog parks in Melton.

Some of these include, dog play equipment, fencing issues, water facilities, improved grass areas and tree planting for shade and visual appeal.

The Diggers Rest Dog Park off leash area was identified within the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve master plan and a funding application to create a dog park was included as part of the 2018/19 financial year municipal budget.

Despite the importance of the facility to our growing community, it continues to raise discussion amongst residents. Dialogue between dog owners and the sporting community are often highlighted through Facebook posts which clearly demonstrate some incompatibility between patrons at the Reserve.

According to Council, no further consultation is proposed at this site. Therefore, it’s anticipated that the report will acknowledge the issues and help provide workable solutions for the future.

In your opinion, should Council undertake additional consultation with residents to address the current issues at the Diggers Rest Recreational Reserve Dog Park?
