Historical Legacy

The Houdini “Festival of Flight” Celebrations, Celebrating 100 years of Aviation in Australia planned for March 18th – 20th & 21st 2010 will include the installation of eight (8) new history and events of Diggers Rest interpretive signage panels at the Caroline Chisholm Gold Shelter and a monument at the Stan Payne Reserve.

The signage and artwork, created by Mother’s Art, will celebrate the township’s vibrant history and also mark the 100th anniversary of Australia’s first powered, controlled, sustained flight at Diggers Rest in 1910.

The monument has tall poles which echo the grass lands, an open construction which is influenced by Houdini’s Voisin Biplane, and angled text and blue forms to remind viewers of the dreams and aspirations of early aviators.

Both the monument and the interpretive history of Diggers Rest will be unveiled at the Commemoration Ceremony on Thursday 18 March 2010 at Stan Payne Reserve, Diggers Rest.
