No compromise on rates relief

Melton City Councillors called a special meeting to deal with proposed rate relief for ratepayers struggling to pay the final instalment of the 2019/20 municipal rates.

Ratepayers are still yet to receive rate notices for the fourth instalment which is due for payment on May 31, 2020.

The meeting which was held last night and live streamed via the internet became heated at times as Councillors fought to find common ground to deliver some effective reprieve for ratepayers facing financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the discussions, many residents are “hurting” and the various options proposed have limitations either legally or financially on the business of Council.

Options for ratepayers include no rate increases for the 2020/21 rate period, a $100 waiver for all owner occupier ratepayers or a $200 waiver for ratepayers who can verify financial hardship.

The three hour meeting failed to reach a consensus on this issue.

No doubt, discussions will continue in the interests of all residents within the City of Melton.

A Special Meeting of Council has been scheduled for May 19, 2020 at 7:00pm.

If you are having difficulty in meeting your rates payments, you can contact Council to make an arrangement or discuss financial assistance on 9747 7200.
