No rest for town plans

Regardless of who is elected for Council, Diggers Rest residents will need to continue to advocate for better services and infrastructure.

The township of Diggers Rest is part of the Watts Ward electoral boundary within the City of Melton, which is often referred to as the Eastern Corridor.

Besides Diggers Rest, Watts Ward includes the areas of Bonnie Brook, Grange Fields, Hillside, Plumpton, Taylors Hill and Toolern Vale.

As such, larger populated areas like Hillside and Taylors Hill usually determine which candidates are elected based on the sheer size of the voting base compared to Diggers Rest.

Although Diggers Rest remains constrained by the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB), Melbourne Airport Environs Overlay (MAEO) and the Green Wedge Zone (GWZ).

Promises by candidates and developers to provide better services and infrastructure should not be ignored.

Therefore, together we should be working with our elected representatives toward:

  • safer road and pathway networks for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists
  • better access to Council services, including hard waste disposal and collection
  • access to recreational facilities for all residents
  • whole of community engagement with respect to event planning and delivery
  • strongly advocating for local employment options, especially the town centre development
  • initiatives to encourage sustainable streetscape and beautification
  • unified advocacy for user friendly parks and gardens, which could include the much talked about development of a water park
  • expansion of the 483 bus route to service the new estates
