The year 2001 marked the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Victoria, an event which transformed the state and helped to shape modern Australia. In recognition of the official 1851 discovery, an “Off to the Diggings” re-enactment was staged based closely on the original miners route.

The walk from Melbourne to Wedderburn included overnight stops at Diggers Rest, Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton.
